Let’s begin with how do you preserve the bloom of your perfume?
A few squirts of your favourite perfume and you’re ready for the day, but, wait, something doesn’t smell right… you notice the concentration of your perfume’s bloom is faint and somewhat metallic. Has this happened to you? (gasp!) or even if it hasn’t, be sure it doesn’t and read-on. This is probably because you have not been storing it right, perfumes have the tendency to deteriorate in heat & sunlight, they are best preserved by storing in a dry, cool, and dark place, like your closet or shelves of your fridge.
Tip: to prolong the life expectancy of your perfume – don’t open the perfume bottle unless you’re using it, the expiration countdown begins as soon as you open the bottle.
We’ll take you through 5 ways of wearing your perfume right.
- Skin as warm as it should be
Skin is a perfect canvas for an alluring scentful expedition, and the idea of applying your body perfume while your skin is optimally warm post a shower does the trick (as pores on your skin are open). Tip: hydration is a must, layer your skin with a light sheet of non-fragrant moisturiser/lotion to create steady anchors for the perfume molecules to stick and lock themselves on to the skin.
2. Ditch rubbing to extend the sillage of your perfume
To preserve the integrity of a perfume, avoid rubbing your wrists as soon as you’ve spritzed some (we feel the urge) but let the perfume sink in by absolutely doing nothing, we mean it! The middle notes in a perfume are the ones that last the longest; however, once you have rubbed your perfume, the top notes fade in no time exposing the middle notes and changing the course of the perfume’s unfolding.
3. Let’s talk tresses
Here’s how you can make a great first impression: lightly spritz your hair with your favourite perfume, perfume from your hair diffuses in the air and the porous nature of hair can hold it longer. On a side note, be sure to use a non-alcoholic one as it (alcoholic) can dehydrate, damage & weaken your hair.
4. Switch your fragrance occasionally
When you’re exposed to a stimulus like fragrance (pleasant smell) molecules of the fragrance suspended in the air stimulate the olfactory receptors which trigger the brain and smell is perceived but over a period of time (via pattern recognition) the brain automatically mutes the stimulus to avoid overstimulation. It’s best to change your perfume occasionally.
5. Feel free to spritz intermittently
For long-lasting lingering aroma, spritz your perfume intermittently. Mona Kattan (an Iraqi-American beauty entrepreneur, co-founder and global president of Huda Beauty, and founder of kayali fragrance) advises to target pulse points while spritzing (number of spritzes depend on how concentrated you want your fragrance). 2-3 spritz should do the work. Common pulse points: on top/behind your ears, around your neck, wrists, midriff, inside the elbows, behind your knees, and down your calves/ankles.
